Did you know that 78% of Americans tackle spring cleaning diligently every year? If you’re part of the majority, then congratulations, you’re doing a great job cleaning your home!
Regardless of whether you keep up with regular cleaning or not, one area that many people struggle with is the kitchen. It’s a high traffic area and it needs to be extra-clean since food is prepped, cooked, and served here.
If you need some help, then you’re in the right place. Here are 6 kitchen cleaning tips you should know!
1. Soak Your Stove Grates in Ammonia
Over time, your stove grates will most likely get covered in grease and other food splatters. You take them off every once in a while to scrub at them, only to get tired and frustrated. In the end, your grates still look dirty.
Save yourself some trouble and soak them in a little bit of ammonia overnight. In the morning, your grates will be nice and shiny, with no scrubbing required! All you’ll have to do is gently wipe the grate down with a sponge and it’ll look like new.
Do note that you should not mix ammonia with any other cleaners you might have in your pantry. If you’re using ammonia to clean your grates, use only that, nothing else. Other cleaners might have bleach, which can create toxic fumes when mixed with ammonia.
2. Use a DIY Paste Mix for Your Oven
Another kitchen appliance that can get quite gunky is the oven. Maybe a few casseroles bubbled over and left a hardened black mess in there.
You’ll want to create a mixture of 1 cup baking soda and 1 tablespoon of dish soap. Slowly add water to it until it becomes a thick paste.
You can then apply this paste liberally around your entire oven. It’s safe to use on glass doors too. If you run out, just simply make more!
Leave the paste on for at least 15 minutes and then take a scouring pad to the oven. It should mostly be very easy to scrub all the gunk off of your oven.
Lastly, you’ll want to run a slightly damp microfiber cloth over the surfaces to dry your oven off.
What’s great is this paste can be used to spot clean your oven. So if you have yet another casserole bubble over, apply this paste to the affected area after the oven cools off. Then, scrub it off as instructed above.
3. Soak Oven Racks in the Bath
We’ve shown you how to clean the inside of an oven, but what about those dirty racks? If they’re small enough, and the buildup isn’t too much, a good scrub in the sink with some soap and a scouring pad can usually do the job.
But what if you have extremely dirty oven racks? Then you’ll want to put them in the bath!
Fill up your tub with some hot water so that they cover your racks completely. Then, add some dish soap and a few dryer sheets. Let your oven racks soak for at least a few hours or overnight.
Take the dryer sheets and wipe down your racks. You’ll find that the gunk will come right off so you won’t have to use any elbow grease! After, just give your racks a good rinse and dry them off before putting them back in the oven.
4. Make Sure to Under Your Garbage Disposal’s Splash Guard
It’s good practice to give your sink a light clean after each meal, after you’ve done your dishes. At the very least, wipe it down once a day or two.
But you’ll also want to get your garbage disposal’s splash guard, which many people forget about. You’ll want to make sure the garbage disposal is off, then reach underneath the guard to pull it inside-out. Most likely, you’ll see a bunch of old food bits that are trapped underneath.
Take a toothbrush and put some dish soap on it, then get to scrubbing. You might have to give it a few rounds before it’s completely clean.
If you’ve noticed a strange smell coming from the sink area, cleaning underneath the splash guard will usually take care of that.
5. Put Lemon Rinds and Ice Cubes Through Your Garbage Disposal
An additional way to keep your kitchen smelling fresh is to put some lemon rinds and ice cubes through your garbage disposal. Sometimes, just scrubbing the splash guard is just not enough to get rid of the nasty smells!
This is an easy tip to do and will instantly make your kitchen smell better. Plus, the ice cubes will sharpen up your disposal blades so it’ll be easier to grind things in the future.
6. Hire a Professional Cleaner
You can follow all the kitchen cleaning tips you want, but the fact is, a professional’s touch is exactly what you need. They can deep clean a kitchen so all the dust, debris, and germs are gone. Not only that, but they can come back regularly to keep your space in tip-top shape so you never have to do anything more than spot-clean areas after cooking.
This can free up your time so you don’t have to waste hours of your time scrubbing away at those stubborn stains. Just think of how relaxed you’ll be!
